The DOTECO TIK30 Starry Sky 510 Battery is a compact 400mAh variable-voltage 510-thread battery with a wrap-around curved display, five voltage settings, a fifteen-second preheat cycle and USB Type-C charging. It is the battery to buy if you are tired of cheap pen batteries that fire at one fixed voltage, give you no idea how much charge is left, and burn a good cartridge on the first pull.

Most 510 batteries sold in Nairobi are the same anonymous pen: one button, three indicator flashes, no screen, and no way to tell what voltage you are actually running. The TIK30 is the opposite of that. The curved Starry Sky screen wraps the body and tells you the voltage, the length of your draw and the remaining battery, and the five-step voltage range lets you match the device to the cartridge instead of hoping for the best.

Why a variable-voltage 510 battery is worth it

Your cartridges last longer. A fixed-voltage battery running too hot is the single most common reason a cart tastes burnt halfway through. Being able to drop to 1.8V or 2.4V on a thin distillate protects the coil and the oil.

Thick oil actually works. Live resin and liquid-diamond carts are viscous, especially in cool Nairobi evenings. The 15-second preheat warms the oil so it wicks properly instead of giving you a dry, scratchy pull.

You can see the charge. The battery indicator on screen means no more guessing from a blinking light, and no more a device dying mid-evening with no warning.

Type-C charging. The same cable as your phone. No hunting for an old micro-USB lead.

It fits what you already own. Standard 510 threading, so any ordinary 510 cartridge screws straight in.

What is a 510-thread battery, and will my cartridge fit?

"510" is a thread standard, not a brand. It describes the screw fitting at the base of a cartridge — ten threads of 0.5mm pitch — and it has been the default for oil cartridges for years. If your cartridge screws onto a pen battery, it is almost certainly 510.

That means the TIK30 works with effectively the whole cartridge shelf: Trap House Exotics 1g carts, Mellow Melts, Choiceslab, and any other standard 510 cart you already have. The exceptions are all-in-one disposables, which have the battery built in and nothing to unscrew, and a handful of proprietary pod systems that deliberately use their own fitting.

One practical note: very wide cartridges can sit awkwardly on a narrow battery. The TIK30's base is a standard width, so ordinary 1g and 2g carts sit flush.

Which voltage should you use?

This is the part most people never get told, and it is the difference between a cart that lasts and one that tastes burnt on day two. Thinner oil needs less power; thicker oil needs more. Start low and work up.

  • 1.8V — lowest. Thin distillate, CBD oil, and anyone who wants the most flavour and the least vapour. Also the setting the preheat function uses.
  • 2.4V — low. The sensible default for most standard distillate carts. Good flavour, modest cloud, very easy on the coil.
  • 3.0V — mid. The all-rounder. Works for the majority of live resin and liquid-diamond carts.
  • 3.6V — high. Thick, cold or nearly-empty carts. Bigger vapour, noticeably warmer draw.
  • 4.2V — highest. Only for genuinely thick oil that will not move at lower settings. Expect to lose some flavour, and expect the cart to empty faster.

If a cart tastes burnt, the voltage is too high — not too low. That is the most common mistake. Drop a step, take shorter draws, and give the coil a few seconds between pulls.

Using the preheat function

Preheat runs the coil at 1.8V for fifteen seconds without you drawing on it. It warms the oil so it flows into the wick properly. You want it when:

  • The cart has been sitting overnight and the oil has thickened.
  • It is a cool evening or you are up-country somewhere cold.
  • You are running a live resin or liquid-diamond cart, which are thicker than ordinary distillate.
  • The first pull comes out thin and tasteless — a classic sign the oil has not reached the coil.

Preheat also rescues a clogged airway. If the draw feels blocked, a preheat cycle followed by a gentle pull usually clears it. Do not force a hard draw on a cold, clogged cart — that is how you flood the coil and get oil in your mouth.

Battery care — how to get more than a few months out of it

A 400mAh cell is small by design; this is a pocket device, not a mod. Treated well it will last a long time, and these four habits are most of it:

Do not leave it on the charger overnight. Unplug it once it reads full. Constant trickle charging is what kills small cells early.

Do not run it flat repeatedly. Topping up from around a quarter is kinder than draining to zero every time.

Keep it out of direct sun and out of a hot car. Heat degrades lithium cells faster than use does, and a parked car in Nairobi afternoon sun gets hot enough to matter.

Unscrew the cart before a long journey. Pressure and vibration are what cause leaks, and a leaked cart gums up the battery's centre pin.

If the connection ever gets sticky, a cotton bud with a little isopropyl alcohol on the centre pin fixes most "my cart stopped firing" problems.

Troubleshooting a 510 battery

Nothing happens when I press the button. Check it is switched on — most 510 batteries lock with five rapid clicks and unlock the same way. Then check the charge, then clean the pin.

The light blinks and it will not fire. Blinking usually means one of three things: the battery is empty, the cart is screwed on too tight and has shorted the connection, or the coil has failed. Loosen the cart a quarter-turn and try again before assuming the worst.

It fires but there is no vapour. The oil has not reached the coil. Run preheat, then draw gently. If it still gives nothing, the cart may be genuinely empty — hold it to a light and check.

It tastes burnt. Lower the voltage, take shorter pulls, and pause between them. Once a coil is genuinely burnt it does not recover, so catching this early matters.

It is leaking. Do not over-tighten — finger-tight is enough. Store it upright, mouthpiece up, and unscrew the cart if you are travelling.

TIK30 or the Tik40 ULTRA?

Both are DOTECO, both are 400mAh, and both take standard 510 carts. The difference is what else they do.

Choose the TIK30 if you want the wrap-around Starry Sky display, five clean preset voltages and a 15-second preheat in the most compact shape. Five presets are simpler to live with than a dial — you learn your setting and leave it there.

Choose the Tik40 ULTRA if you want fine voltage control in 0.1V steps rather than five fixed steps, a full metal body, and a built-in cigarette lighter in the base — which makes it a two-in-one if you also roll.

If you only ever run one kind of cartridge, the TIK30's presets are all you need. If you switch between thin distillate and thick live resin regularly, the Tik40's finer steps earn their keep.

Frequently asked questions

Will this fit my cartridge?

If your cart screws onto a battery, it is a 510 and it will fit. That covers almost every oil cartridge sold in Kenya. All-in-one disposables have no removable cart and are not compatible.

How long does the battery last on a charge?

400mAh is a day of moderate use for most people — longer at 1.8V or 2.4V, shorter at 4.2V, because higher voltage draws more current per pull.

How long does it take to charge?

Roughly 30 to 45 minutes from flat over USB Type-C. Unplug it when the screen shows full.

What is the preheat for?

Warming thick or cold oil so it reaches the coil. Fifteen seconds at 1.8V. Use it on the first pull of the day and on any live resin cart.

Which voltage is best?

Start at 2.4V for standard distillate and 3.0V for live resin, then adjust. Lower means more flavour and longer cart life; higher means more vapour.

Does it come with a cartridge?

No — this is the battery only. Browse the Vapes & Carts and Exotic Carts ranges for 510 cartridges to pair with it.

Can I use it with CBD cartridges?

Yes. Any 510-thread CBD cartridge works. CBD oil is often thinner, so 1.8V or 2.4V usually gives the best result.

Which colour should I pick?

All four are the same device — Rainbow, Black, Purple and White differ only in finish. Rainbow is the loudest; Black is the most discreet.

Do you deliver outside Nairobi?

Yes. Same-day across Nairobi on orders placed before 6pm, countrywide shipping everywhere else in Kenya, in plain unbranded packaging.
