This guide explains each one in plain English: what a dry herb vaporizer is, how a disposable THC vape works, what THC carts and 510 batteries are, and the real difference between live resin and liquid diamonds.

By the end you'll know which one suits you, and every device we stock at Royal Mist, our smoke and vape shop in Nairobi, is linked so you can go straight to it. We deliver same-day across Nairobi and countrywide across Kenya.

The short answer

Dry herb vape

What goes in it: ground flower (dry herb)

You also need: a herb grinder

Refillable? Yes, you pack fresh herb every session

Best for: anyone who already buys flower and wants to taste it

Disposable vape

What goes in it: nothing, it comes filled with oil

You also need: nothing

Refillable? No, when it's empty it's done

Best for: zero setup, first-timers and nights out

Cart + battery

What goes in it: a pre-filled oil cart

You also need: a 510 battery, bought once

Refillable? No, the cart is single-use but the battery is kept

Best for: regular users who want choice and control

One thing people often get wrong: carts are not refillable either. A cart is sealed, just like a disposable. The only part you reuse is the battery, which runs cart after cart. More on that below.

Dry herb vs disposable vs cart, side by side

Dry herb vape Disposable vape Cart + 510 battery
What you put in it Ground flower Nothing, it arrives filled with oil A pre-filled oil cart
What you keep buying Flower. The vaporizer is a one-off A whole new device each time Carts. The battery is a one-off
Setup Grind, pack, heat up None, just draw Screw on the cart, pick a voltage
Refillable? Yes, with fresh herb No No, carts are single-use
The part you reuse The whole vaporizer Nothing The battery
Control Temperature settings Mostly fixed, a few have settings Voltage settings and preheat
Upkeep Empty and brush the chamber, charge it Charge it if it has a port Charge the battery, wipe the connection now and then
Cost over time One device, then only flower Usually the most, since every device has its own battery Usually less than disposables, since you only replace the cart

Dry herb vaporizers, explained

A dry herb vaporizer (or dry herb vape) is a small heated oven for flower. You grind your herb, pack it into the chamber and switch it on. The device heats the herb until its active compounds and flavour come off as vapour, but it stays below the point where the herb would catch fire. No flame, no ash, no rolling paper.

Heat matters for another reason too. Raw flower contains mostly THCA, which only turns into THC once it's heated. A lab study of five vaporizers found that the electric, temperature-controlled ones reliably did that conversion without burning the herb, while a gas-powered one did burn it. That's why the dry herb vapes worth buying are electric with proper temperature control.

Conduction vs convection

  • Conduction: the herb touches the hot walls of the chamber and heats up through contact. Quick to warm up and simple to use. Give the device a gentle shake or stir the herb halfway through for an even session. The PAX 2 is a conduction vaporizer.
  • Convection: hot air is drawn through the herb, so it heats more evenly without sitting against a hot surface. Many people find it gives a cleaner, more flavourful draw. The Yocan Hit 2 has a ceramic convection oven.

Which temperature should you use?

Most dry herb vapes let you pick the heat. Lower settings, around 180°C to 190°C, taste more of the herb and give lighter vapour. Higher settings, around 200°C to 215°C, give thicker vapour and a warmer draw. Start low and work up until you like the draw. The PAX 2 has four set temperatures from 182°C to 215°C, and the Yocan Hit 2 and Vane 2 go from 93°C to 249°C, so you can fine-tune.

You'll need a grinder

Dry herb vaporizers work best with evenly ground flower. Whole buds heat unevenly and waste herb. A good herb grinder fixes that, and our guide to choosing a grinder covers which kind to get.

Dry herb vaporizers in Nairobi at Royal Mist

  • PAX 2 Dry Herb Vaporizer: conduction oven, four heat settings from 182°C to 215°C, lip-sensing so it saves heat between draws, and a brushed aluminium body that looks more like a flash drive than a vape. Black, silver, blue and red.
  • Yocan Hit 2 Dry Herb Vaporizer: ceramic convection oven, 93°C to 249°C, 1800mAh battery, colour screen, magnetic mouthpiece and Type-C charging. The pick for daily use and shared sessions.
  • Yocan Vane 2 Dry Herb Vaporizer: pocket-size with a ceramic chamber, 93°C to 249°C, 1200mAh battery, colour screen, vibration alerts and a 3-minute session timer. The one to carry.

Smoke wax or concentrates instead of flower? That's a different device. The Yocan Evolve Plus Kit is a wax pen with an 1100mAh battery, three voltage settings, a quartz coil and a small storage jar in the base. Don't put flower in it, and don't put wax in a dry herb vaporizer. See them all in our dry herb vaporizers collection, with same-day delivery across Nairobi.

Disposable THC vapes, explained

A disposable THC vape is a battery, a heating coil and a tank of oil built into one sealed device. There's nothing to set up. Most are draw-activated, so you just inhale, and most of ours are rechargeable, so the battery lasts until the oil runs out. When the oil is finished, the whole device is done. You can't refill it.

Disposables come in different sizes. Most of ours hold 2g of oil, the 3G Favorites hold 3g and the Wake&Bake holds 5g. Some have two or three separate tanks, each with its own strain, so you can switch between them. Our indica vs sativa vs hybrid guide lists every strain in every device.

The biggest difference between one disposable and the next is the oil inside. That's what live resin, liquid diamonds and the rest mean.

Live resin vs liquid diamonds (and the other words on the box)

Live resin is made from plants that are frozen fresh at harvest instead of being dried and cured first. Freezing keeps more of the terpenes, the compounds behind each strain's smell and taste, which is why live resin vapes are known for flavour that tastes like the plant.

Liquid diamonds start from fresh-frozen plants too. As the extract sits, THCA crystallises out of the terpene-rich sauce into the crystals called diamonds. Those crystals are then melted or dissolved back into the sauce so the oil flows in a vape. Liquid diamonds usually test higher in cannabinoids than live resin, while live resin usually leads on flavour.

So the short version of live resin vs liquid diamonds: live resin is the flavour pick, liquid diamonds the strength pick, and plenty of devices now blend the two. One honest caveat: "liquid diamonds" isn't a standardised term, so recipes vary by brand. Strength also depends on how much you take, so go slow with any new device.

On the box What it means Known for Find it in
Live resin Extract from fresh-frozen plants Flavour that tastes like the plant Sherbinskis Quattro, Choiceslab, Fryd Donuts Dual

Carts and 510 batteries, explained

A cart (short for cartridge) is a small glass tank of oil with a heating coil and a mouthpiece. On its own it does nothing. It screws onto a 510 battery, which powers the coil when you press the button or draw.

"510" is the name of the standard screw thread, not a brand. Almost every oil cart uses it, so any 510 cart fits any 510 battery. That's the big advantage of carts: one battery, any brand, any strain.

Voltage, in one minute

Most 510 batteries let you choose the power. Thinner oil, like standard distillate, wants less: start around 2.4V to 2.7V. Thicker oil, like live resin and liquid diamonds, wants a bit more, around 3.0V to 3.4V. If a cart tastes burnt, the voltage is too high, so go down a step. If thick oil won't draw on a cool evening, use the preheat button first.

Can you refill a cart or a disposable?

No, and no. Carts are not refillable, just like disposables. A pre-filled cart is sealed at the factory and isn't made to be opened or topped up. When it's empty, it's done.

The difference is what happens next. With a disposable, the battery goes too, because it's built in. With a cart, only the cart is finished. The battery is yours to keep: screw on a new cart, any brand, any strain, and carry on.

Trying to open a sealed cart or disposable usually just breaks it and leaks oil, so don't. If refilling matters to you, a dry herb vaporizer is the one you refill, with fresh flower every session.

Carts or disposables: which is better?

Carts or disposables? It's one of the questions we get asked most, so here's the honest carts vs disposables comparison.

  • Setup. A disposable works straight out of the box. Carts need a battery the first time, then you just screw each new cart on.
  • What you throw away. With a disposable, the whole device. With carts, just the empty cart, because the battery stays.
  • Refills. Neither can be refilled. The only reusable part in the whole picture is the 510 battery.
  • Cost over time. A battery is a one-off buy, and after that you only pay for carts. Every disposable comes with its own battery, so if you vape most days, carts usually work out cheaper.
  • Choice. With carts you can keep an indica cart for the evening and a sativa cart for the day, and swap them on the same battery. With disposables you get one strain per device, unless you pick a dual chamber or triple tank like the Boutiq Switch.
  • Control. 510 batteries have voltage settings and preheat, which helps thick live resin and liquid diamonds oil. Most disposables run at one fixed setting.
  • How much oil. Our carts are 1g. Most of our disposables hold 2g, and some hold 3g or 5g.
  • Going out. A disposable is one small thing to carry. A cart and battery is two, though the Cigar Style battery hides the cart completely.
Pick a disposable if you… Pick carts and a battery if you…
want zero setup vape most days and want it cheaper over time
are trying THC vapes for the first time like switching strains through the day
want more oil in one device want voltage control and preheat
want one thing in your pocket want less to throw away

Which one is for you?

  • First time trying a THC vape? Start with a disposable. There's nothing to learn, and a hybrid strain is a good first pick. Our strain guide explains why.
  • You vape most days? Get a 510 battery and keep a couple of carts. The TIK30 is easy to live with, and the Tik40 ULTRA gives the finest control.
  • You already buy flower? A dry herb vaporizer lets you taste the herb without burning it. The Vane 2 is the one to carry, the Hit 2 the one for daily sessions.
  • Can't pick one strain? Get a triple tank like the Boutiq Switch V5 or Switch Gum, or a dual chamber like the Sherbinskis Quattro.
  • Flavour first? Go for live resin, like the Sherbinskis Quattro, or a convection dry herb vape like the Hit 2.
  • Want to keep it low-key? The Cigar Style battery looks like a cigar, and the PAX 2 looks like a flash drive.

Getting the most out of any vape

  • Keep vapes, carts and batteries out of the sun and never leave them in a parked car. Heat thins oil and causes leaks.
  • Store carts and disposables upright, mouthpiece up.
  • Screw carts on finger-tight. Over-tightening can stop the battery firing.
  • Take short, gentle draws. Long hard pulls flood the coil and taste harsh.
  • Charge before the battery is completely flat, and unplug it once it's full.
  • Empty and brush a dry herb chamber after every session so the next one tastes clean.

FAQ

What is the difference between live resin and liquid diamonds?

Both start from fresh-frozen plants. Live resin keeps more of the plant's terpenes, so it's known for flavour. Liquid diamonds are THCA crystals melted back into a terpene-rich sauce, so they usually test stronger. Recipes vary by brand.

Are carts refillable?

No. Pre-filled carts are sealed and made for one use, just like disposables. Only the 510 battery is reused, cart after cart.

Can you refill a disposable vape?

No. A disposable is sealed, with the battery and oil built in. When the oil runs out, the whole device is finished.

Carts or disposables: which is better for beginners?

A disposable. There's nothing to set up, so it's the easiest way to try a THC vape. Once you know you vape often, a 510 battery and carts usually work out cheaper.

Are carts cheaper than disposables?

Usually, if you vape often. You buy a 510 battery once and after that you only pay for carts, while every disposable comes with its own battery built in. If you only vape now and then, a disposable is the simpler buy.

What battery do I need for a cart?

A 510 battery. 510 is the standard thread on almost every oil cart, so any 510 cart fits any 510 battery. Browse our 510 cart batteries.

What voltage should I use for a live resin or liquid diamonds cart?

Thick oils like live resin and liquid diamonds usually draw best around 3.0V to 3.4V. Thinner distillate carts want less, around 2.4V to 2.7V. If it tastes burnt, go down a step, and use the preheat button on cold evenings.

Is a dry herb vaporizer the same as a THC vape pen?

No. A dry herb vaporizer heats ground flower that you pack yourself. A THC vape pen, whether it's a disposable or a cart on a battery, heats a ready-made oil.

Which is stronger, live resin or liquid diamonds?

Liquid diamonds usually test higher in cannabinoids, but strength depends on the product and on how much you take. Go slow with any new device, especially 2g, 3g and 5g ones.

Do disposable vapes need charging?

Most of ours are rechargeable, so you can top up the battery and finish all the oil. They arrive ready to use.

Can I put wax in a dry herb vaporizer?

No. Dry herb vaporizers are for flower only. For wax and concentrates, use a wax pen like the Yocan Evolve Plus.
